We are delighted to announce Hanif Kara as a speaker in our Luminary Pulse Series, a program of talks and panel discussions featuring leading international, multidisciplinary talents throughout the Gallery Weekend.

Kara is a celebrated  design director and co-founder of London-based structural engineering practice Adams Kara Taylor (AKT II), as well as a Professor currently teaching at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD). He is credited with pioneering a design-led approach which incorporates prefabrication, sustainable construction, and complex analysis methods; and for raising the wider profile of Design Engineers in the architectural community. Between 1996 and 2012, AKT II won over 220 design awards, many for projects helmed by Kara. Hanif was the first structural engineer to be selected for the Master Jury for the 2004 cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, and since 2014 is a member of the Award’s Steering Committee.

He is a fellow member of the Institute of Civil Engineers, Institute of Structural Engineers, Royal Society of Arts, and is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects. In 2009 he was curator for the first ever solo exhibition of the work of AKT at the Architectural Association in London.

His work, which also falls into the realm of research and education, takes an interdisciplinary approach focused on sustainability, design, and innovation.

Kara will present at the Gallery Weekend KL,  providing insights on the value of informed multidisciplinary practices, and the impact of art practice for sustainable placemaking and design based development.
